Welcome, stranger! 👋
Hi! I'm Zelora (they/he/she). This is a silly little website about game design, video games, TTRPGs, and the other stuff that makes life a little better. It's honestly more for me than for you, but feel free to hangout :3. I will not apologize for the ":3" virus.
🖤 Things I like! 🖤
One thing about me is that I don't really do favorites. I think that the concept of finding ONE game that is superior to any other game is wacko. Especially when you pick a favorite from a category with multiple genres since comparing them is really difficult. For example, is Minecraft better than Danganronpa? They are so different; what is the point?!
Instead, I prefer doing unorganised lists with art that influenced me. Less pressure. Also, it allows for more discovery of really good art!
Video Games 🕹️
Video games are probably the type of art (yes, video games are pieces of art, I will fight you for it) that I am the most familiar with. I've played games my whole life and my catalogue of games are quite large.
Outer Wilds (2019)
Developer:
Mobius Digital
Publisher:
Annapurna Interactive
Outer Wilds is the video game that made me wanna become a game designer. When I played, I was mesmerised by the vibes that this game gave me. This game is able to both give you a sense of existential dread when faced with how little you (as the character and the player) matter within the uncaring universe and a sense of wonder, awe, and curiousity.
This game is so melancholic. I rarely cry when I play video games and multiple parts of the game made me shed a tear because of its powerful and beautiful message. It's hard to talk about this game without spoiling it. It's the type of game where you need to go in completely blind for a complete experience. That is a shame though since this game is clearly not for everyone. If you are naturally curious and you like uncovering lore, give it a try!
Signalis (2022)
Developer:
rose-engine
Publisher:
Humble Games & Playism
Signalis is weird in all the best ways. It's the kind of game that you need a 4h video essay after you play to understand what is going on. I specifically recommend this one; it goes in depth without loosing your attention.
However, somehow, this game is able to still be a valuable narrative experience even without understanding everything. When I played, the symbolism, the vibes, and the music was enough to build a satisfying narrative experience. I might have not understood who some important characters were, when I reached the end, I was still moved and I still thought that this game was amazing. It does help that I'm a "the curtain is blue because the main character is depressed" kinda person. What I wanna say is that Signalis' story is carried by symbolism and by vibes.
Also, the inclusion of a queer relationship in the game was and still is really important to me. At the time, I was already openly gay and dating a trans woman, so queer relationships were not something new to me. However, even though the game portraited a lesbian relationship, it made me think about my gender. I think this game made me non-binary or at least game me a new understanding of my gender. So it holds a special place in my heart.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)
Developer:
Nintendo EPD
Publisher:
Nintendo
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is often compared to its sequel and many people will say that the sequel improves the game in every way. It's probably true, but I will still put BOTW cus I haven't played Tears of the Kingdom. Game too long.
Anyway, BOTW is an amazing game. I think having the single objective of "Defeat Ganon" throughout the whole game is a brilliant choice. It gives context to the open world and to the loot you can get. Sometimes, in open world games, you can get upgrades, but there isn't any reason to other than for its own sake.
Anyway, BOTW is a 9/10. It's an amazing experience. And Gerudo Link makes this a 11/10.
If Found... (2020)
Developer:
Dreamfeel
Publisher:
Annapurna Interactive
If you are trans, you MUST play this game. It's a visual novel, which might not be everyone's type of game, but it uses a clever erasing mechanic to build wonderful collages representing the trials and tribulation of being marginalized.
I also love how "local" the game is. The story takes place in Ireland and it is not shy about it. The way the game uses Irish vocabulary and local slangs is very charming and adds another layer to the experience
ULTRAKILL (2020, early access)
Developer:
Arsi "Hakita" Patala
Publisher:
New Blood Interactive
Honestly, I don't have much to say. Funny robot go boom.
I do think that the level design in this game could be improved. Especially in Act 2.
Movies 🎥
I'm less familiar with movies, so I'll just include some images of movies I like. Most of the time, the reason why I like a movie is cus it's nice idk.
Spirited Away
Parasite
The Substance
Whisper of the Heart
Theater & Musicals 🎭
I'm a bit theater dork and my gay sin is singing showtunes when no one asked for it. Since no one around me wants me to hyperfixate on that, I will now use this Neocities website as an excuse to show you all the musicals (and plays) that I like.
Into the Woods
Falsettos
Hamilton
Adieu Monsieur Haffman
Heathers
Les Misérables
